Strictly Blunder in Semi-Finals

 semi final results

ALL three couples in Strictly Come Dancing will be in next week’s final—after reality TV’s biggest cock-up.

Viewers were left in confusion as the BBC1 show’s hosts Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly offered NO explanation after the dance-off was axed last night.

All yesterday’s millions of votes will be carried over to next week’s final—when Tom Chambers, Rachel Stevens and Lisa Snowdon and their pro dance partners will all compete in the final.

But the News of The World can reveal the full inside story of the fiasco—which is a severe embarrassment to the BBC.

It happened after Rachel and partner Vincent Simone and Lisa with Brendan Cole wowed judges with their tangos to tie in first place with the judges’ votes. Tom and partner Camiller Dalllerup were bottom.

An insider said: “Because of the way the internal voting system of combining judges’ and viewer votes works, it meant the two girl celebs each had THREE points and Tom had ONE.

“But it meant that even if Tom received the most viewer votes, he could only have got FOUR points. If either Rachel or Lisa received the least viewer votes, they would have got one point, making their total four points too—the same as Tom.

“So there was NO WAY for Tom to escape the dance off, and the viewers that voted for him would have wasted their money.”

With each vote costing a minimum of 15p, BBC chiefs faced a huge scandal if they had not abandoned the eviction as potentially, millions could have wasted their cash trying to keep Tom in.

BBC chiefs were left red-faced last night because they failed to give viewers ANY explanation for the fiasco in the second of last night’s two shows. They later released a statement to the News of the World.

It said: “The vote opened just before the first programme went off air. So we made a decision that the fairest option to all of our dancers was that all the votes cast will stand and be carried through to next week’s final.”

The BBC insider added: “It’s GCSE maths for heaven’s sake – I can’t believe that Strictly hadn’t thought this through.

“This is the biggest show on the BBC on its second biggest night of the year and the whole thing has gone horribly wrong.

“Brucie, Tess and the judges are absolutely furious. They can’t believe that such an idiotic mistake has been made. They have all been made to look like complete laughing stocks.

“What made matters far, far worse is that viewers were kept in the dark.”

The BBC were alerted to the scandal by the News of the World after we were tipped off about the mix-up during the first show. Producers then realised the error.

An emergency meeting was called – and it was decided they had no choice but to abandon the dance off. When viewers tuned into the second show, they were immediately told that phone lines had been frozen.

An estimated audience of 11 million viewers tuned into the 9pm results show and watched as the fiasco unfolded.

But it was not till the very end of the show that the contestants discovered that none of them would be evicted and would go through to next week’s final. They all looked stunned and bewildered.

BBC chiefs are now investigating how they misled viewers so badly.

The Strictly judges quickly realised the error and were involved in a huge bust-up behind the scenes as producers were alerted to the fiasco.

But the catastrophe could all have been easily avoided. Our insider explained: “If they had just awarded both Rachel and Lisa two points, instead of three, this would never have happened.”

Angry fans posted complaints on the show’s message board. One wrote: “’They really should have told the public that their vote for Tom wouldn’t count. Simple maths.”

We as a family have watched strictly for many years and are bitterly dissapointed with last nights farce. Our grandad reckons its all fixed and this just lends credability to his thinking. If this had happened last week surely Austin healy would be in the semi final. G*family.

  • LuCanham

I dont see what the fuss is about, if Tom had to dance in a dance off so what? He would have had the same opportunity as everyone else to be saved or to be eliminated. Its an entertainment programme not international politics! Get a grip folks!

  • Raddang

I don’t like to say ‘I told you so’, but last year I wrote to the BBC warning them that their scoring system was severely flawed and could lead to unfair results. I included an example.
Their response was ‘We have passed your comments to the production team’. Pity the ‘Production Team’ never got further than their 2 times table…..
And as for the article above under ‘Strictly Blunder in Semi-Finals’, even if Rachel and Lisa were given ’2′ points on the judges votes an even more complicated problem would have resulted so that would not have been the answer……Somebody else who didn’t get past their 2 x eh?

  • Alfreda Pearson

I think that the result was the best thing for the show. If John Sergeant had not acted so selfishly by pulling out instead of facing being voted off as everyone else did there would have been (& should have been) three pairs in the Final. However it happened our family thinks it is the best possible outcome.

  • Raddang

Have to disagree Alfreda Pearson………it is far more complicated than just to roll over the votes.
Not least, how about all those who normally vote for Tom but realising (something the Beeb didn’t) that Tom MUST be in the dance off irrespective of what happens in the phone vote, so what’s the point of voting??????
The roll over votes are now biased and next week does not start from a level playing field (hate that phrase)

  • Patricia & David Thompson

We cant see what the full is about – best result for all of them – at least they all got to the FINAL. We certainly do not want a refund – whoever heard of such a thing – isnt this all for charity anyway.

Still the best prog on TV and one which makes Saturday
night worth watching. Great for all the family

  • kat

i think it is great that all 3 are in the final, that is the usuall way. 3 in the final. Tom ans Camilla to win, i hope : /

  • Martin

The feeling is that the voting systems suffered from conspiracy or c*ck-up.

Either way Tom must know that the two girls have performed better throughout the series and he should have been in the dance-off. He expected it and was obviously mightily relieved not to have to go through with it as the judges had already marked him down on the nights performance.

  • elaine

it,s the first year iwatched come dancing and i voted for tom but your system isall wrong whats the use thepublic voting if thejudges deciedwho go through, for the lastcouple of weeks i waisted my MONEY

  • anne

so many of these reality programmes have made errors with the phone ins i dont bother to vote now how can you trust it any more, these c..k ups dont give you any enthusiasum to pick up the phone so if this is correct the same thing would of happened in john sargents case as he was bottom so many times, but i suppose it is good viewing for the bbc……? makes you wonder whether that was kosher

  • Tony

I agree with Raddang above. Let us suppose that a million people are more clever than the BBC and realised that there was no way for Tom to miss the dance off therefore did not bother to vote for him it means that next week he would start with a handicap of a million. The best thing the BBC can do is scrap all this weeks votes and to make all phone calls next week freephone.

  • Maureen

Whatever do I have to look forward to after this coming Saturday. Sad as it may seem ,the programme is my life. Brucie must be knighted in the New Years Honours. Happy Christmas to everyone involved in the best show ever. Long may it continue.

  • Raddang

I do agree with you Maureen….our Saturday evenings have had to be re-arranged to suit the timing of this compelling viewing. Even stoop to having our dinner on a tray OMG what are things coming to?????
Yes; certainly recognise Brucies 60 years in the business, but please put him out to grass now…..he’s had his day.
How about Anton taking over and some new judges???
Put Karen Hardy on the panel…..’She’s my favourite’ lol!

  • THERESA CONNELL

i have always heard the judges say the judge the couple on the dance of, this is not true now is it. lisa was in the dance of three times all ready and should be gone. the news of the world said yesterday the judges hand their vote to the bbc before the live show so the decide who goes.

  • Sari

We were totally frustrated that the Results programme was not, as we had expected, on Sunday evening. If the BBC must change regular programmes round at least please warn us at the end of the previous week’s show. It is the dancing we want to see especially at this stage, and we could at least have recorded the Results show on Saturday evening (a work night) even if it was a mess up.

  • ALFIE

The best Strictly Night I have ever seen, when seeing the joy and excitement of all the couples when told they were all going through that I cried along with them. Gr Gr GREAT – but I have One Criticism ! (ah ah) Rachel will win because of her lovely face not dancing she may have inspired you Alex by jumping onto Vincent, IS THAT THE ARGENTINA Tango ?

    Add word Tango !

  • Helen

The official view of the decision is that Tom could not have been saved from the dance off because the two other contestants had the same points.
This same situation was also the case with Austin & Erin, as the other three contestants had the same points and the dance off was continued. So should they still have been in the semi finals?

  • Colso

Surely whoever came third on the judges votes – irrespective of what the other two scored – they could not be saved from the dance off. The most points the third placed dancer could get is 4, which would still place them in the dance off.

  • Pearl van der oord

I really enjoy strictly, but when I heard the result I was surprised, I live in Holland and I got a bit of a shock when I heard the out come of the votes. Lets not get into a tiss about this it’s went wrong for the first time and this can happen. Strictly is a great family show and we must not forget ” it’s intertainment” and goed.
Things will turn out okay, as Bruce would say “keep dancing”
    I say “keep smiling.

  • THE SOFAMANIACS

    Hello Claude….

Well , we’ve listened to the explanation from the BBC on the reasons of Saturdays FIASCO…and im afraid it was total gibberish and to be honest a load of baloney… we are total fans and apply every year to be there, we have sofa nights to discuss the nights dancing and we score before the judges to see if we match,we are total manics AND LOVE THE SHOW. But im afraid this scoring thing is PANTS.
if on saturday the scores are going to be carried over surley the same applies the couple in third does not have a chance again, or are we being thick !!!.I think this needs to be explained more presice as it was not clear.

    TOTALLY CONFUSED
    SCD SOFA MANICS…

I am really angry at the contemptuous way we are treated by the judges!!! The moneywe pay to vote pays enables them to sit smug and self righteous and trying to ensure we, the voters, do not have a say about who goes through to the next round.

In the x factor the judges did not vote on either the semi or finals and this is right and proper!!!!

It is about time these judges acknowledged our rights and that does not mean voting for their favourites!

I feel that the final is a forgone conclusion as the judges will get their way.

Is anyone else as cross as me?

  • anne marie

I think the bbc were right to do it the fairest way, after all thats’s what the public would want.

Any body knows that it is impossible to get a fair mark from the judges unless thier is an odd number of judges. With 3 or 5 judges it would be impossible to get a tie for marks…… I have judged many national and international competitions and never experienced any problem with the marks because they always have an odd number or use the double average method.
