BBC axes Sunday night results show-yeesssss!

BBC1 has axed Strictly Come Dancing’s Sunday night results programme as it looks to beef up its Saturday schedule with an extended version of the celebrity talent show.

The decision to run a single Saturday show, which will be about 90 minutes long, will avoid a clash with The X Factor on ITV1, which is reported to be moving its results show to Sunday nights.

Strictly Come Dancing, which will return for a seventh run next month, has aired a Sunday night results show since the fifth season in 2007.

The new series, with former winner Alesha Dixon controversially replacing Arlene Phillips on the judging panel, will be preceded by two Friday night launch shows.

A BBC spokesman said: “We wanted to make Strictly Come Dancing an unmissable TV event so we are packing all the action into one dramatic show.”

“Audiences will be watching, voting and seeing who is in and who is out on a Saturday night,” the spokesman told the Daily Mirror.

Although the Strictly Come Dancing results show aired on Sunday, it was pre-recorded after the main programme on Saturday night, and occasionally struggled to capture the excitement of live television.

The show, which has been exported to more than 30 countries worldwide under the name Dancing with the Stars, launched in 2004 with 9 million viewers watching Natasha Kaplinsky and her dancing partner Brendan Cole triumph in the final.

Last year’s final, which was won by Holby City star Tom Chambers, had an average 12 million viewers for its grand final results show in December. But it could not match the audience for The X Factor final on ITV1, which had an average audience of 13.2 million, according to unofficial overnight figures.

    I agree that it is disgusting that Arlene has been pushed out of Strictly, the show will be the poorer for it. Alesha is a great singer and was a worthy winner of the competition but that does not mean she can judge dancing! No one would have the knowledge and experience that Arlene has. She gave very good advice which most of the competitors took on board and improved because of it – the only saving grace is that it appears they need 2 women to replace her – one of whom at least has some dance experience, but its still not good enough
