Brian Fortuna quits, Darren, Lilia, Ian and Matthew get the chop…oh BBC!

Strictly Come Dancing star Brian Fortuna quit the show last night after BBC chiefs demoted him and four other professional dancers and replaced them with younger stars.

Mr Fortuna, Ian Waite, Matthew Cutler, Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova – who are mostly in their 30s – were offered roles in a ‘professional dance troupe’, meaning they will no longer compete in the show or be paired with celebrities.

Mr Fortuna himself is only 27 but the announcement will reignite claims of ageism at the BBC as the three new dancers brought in to replace them are nearly a decade younger than their predecessors.

The changes to the Strictly format, which will also reduce the number of celebrity contestants from 16 to 14, are seen as a desperate attempt to sex-up the show, which has fallen well behind rival The X Factor in the ratings.

Among the new recruits are 28-year-old Artem Chigvintse, a Latin champion and US So You Think You Can Dance graduate, Jared Murillo, a 21-year-old High School Musical dancer and Swing Youth winner and 30-year-old Burn The Floor star Robin Windsor.

Some of the other professional dancers are now said to be considering their positions on the show after what they regard as a blatant snub after years of service.

Mr Waite, 39, Mr Cutler, 34, Mr Bennett, 33, and Miss Kopylova, 31, have been offered roles in a dance troupe performing ‘show-stopping dance spectacles’ each week on the show.

Mr Cutler won the show in 2007 with singer Alesha Dixon, Miss Kopylova triumphed in 2005 with cricketer Darren Gough and Mr Bennett was the champion in 2004 when he was partnered with actress Jill Halfpenny.

But last year’s shake-up of the female professional dancers saw the BBC accused of ageism when former winner Karen Hardy, then 39, was replaced.

Last night Mr Fortuna, an American professional dancer, said he had stepped down from the show to concentrate on the stage show Burn The Floor which is he currently starring in with his former dance partner  Ali Bastian.

The couple, who have been dating since they were partnered on Strictly, join Burn The Floor when it opens at the Shaftesbury Theatre in central London.

Mr Fortuna said: ‘I really enjoyed working on Strictly over the years – loved the fans and loved all the people I got work with -  but there are changes planned for the next season so I’ve decided not to return to the show.

‘Both Ali and I are looking forward to seeing all our fans at the Shaftesbury Theatre.’

Strictly bosses have repeatedly been accused of ageism since the show began.

Thousands of viewers complained to the BBC when bosses axed 66-year-old Arlene Phillips and replaced her with 30-year-old Alesha Dixon on last year’s series. Critics claimed that it was further proof that the corporation was ageist against older women.

Last year’s dance series was also accused of being stale and of recruiting a host of barely known people as contestants. But by reducing the role of much loved dancers like Matthew Cutler and Ian Waite the show’s bosses once again risk a backlash from fans and accusations of ageism.

A BBC spokesperson said: ‘This series sees the addition of a professional dance group, dedicated to performing routines on a scale never before seen on Strictly.

‘The group will comprise Strictly regulars and some new professional faces. The group routines promise to deliver show-stopping dance spectacles.’

He added: ‘We respect Brian’s decision to leave Strictly and would like to thank him for all his hard work over the last two series and wish him well for his new venture.’

And just hours after the announcement was made, online petitions had sprung calling on the BBC to reinstate the dancers to their former roles. On Twitter one said: ‘I can’t believe they have got rid of Ian Waite, Lillian and Darren they were so nice.’

Another wrote: ‘Why the hell are my three favourite dancers Ian Waite, Matt Cutler and Brian Fortuna only doing the group dance.’

A Strictly insider added: ‘The BBC seems to invite criticism for ageism over its actions.’

I am dismayed that the BBC keep axing some of my favourite dancers. Last year it was Arlene Phillips, this year people like Darren Lilia & Brian. Come on BBC don’t spoil our favourite show!

    • Natalie

I know what you mean Janice, I think its disgraceful of the BBC, I just don’t understand their thinking, It’s not as if the dancers in question have never got anywhere, each of them have won and Ian has come 2nd on more than one occasion, It just goes to show yet again that the BBC are yet again out of touch with the licence fee paying public!

    • Pat

Watched Strictly tonight and could not believe they had got rid of the favourites, Ian, Darren, Lillia,Matthew and our favourite American. Have the BBC gone completely mad, or are they just not interested in what the viewing public think. What audience are they after, not the ones that pay the licence it would appear so looks like goodbye Strictly. About time the licence payers were considered and not pie in the sky idea of what licence payers want

  • Sarah

I really do wish the BBC would leave strictly come dancing alone, why do they insist on changing it, as the saying goes if it aint broke dont fix it. If Len goes that really would be the end of my viewing and since being an avid viewer since the begninning thats hard for me to say. Keep the dancers to dance with the celebs after all I thought that was the point of the programme. No more foreign imports please we hve enough talent of our own!!

    • Christine

I thought I must be the only person who hated all the ridiculous changes to Strictly! You dont fix something that isnt broken. Why would you mess around with a programme with a proven track record? For goodness sake do we have to suffer ‘props’ now as well. If we cant have Eileen back what about Cheryl Cole instead of Alesha (I know nothing about Dance) Dixon, at least Cheryl was a ballroom dancer! Please dont bring back Darcy!

    • Sue

I agree, if they get rid of Len, I won’t watch!

  • Tina

I cannot believe the BBC are messing around with Strictly again, it was bad enough last year replacing Arlene, but now getting rid of 5 of the best dancers on the show. If I wanted to see American dancers I’d watch the American version of Strictly. And all this just to `sex` up the show so it can compete with X Factor is a load of rubbish, ballroom & latin dancing does not need it, it’s pure & sensual and they are trying to turn it into something sordid like everything else with this world. I won’t be watching it anymore. Goodbye Strictly.

  • Colin

Hmmm. A weapon and the end of a leg spring to mind!!! What are the beeb playing at?? It looks like they are trying their utmost to ged rid of this series! I heard rumours that posh spice, amy (crack)house and ex president bill clintons daughter have been invited? I think I will take a leaf from Tina’s book and not bother watching it at all!

  • http://StrictlyComeDancing. Annabellle

The BBC just does not understand the Strictly fan base does it? Why get rid of the most popular dancers? Replacing Arlene Phillips on the judging panel last year with Alesha Dixon was not a smart move either. If they want to get rid of someone what about Bruce Forsyth? HE is past his sell by date. The jokes are so feeble, and the ‘I’m not doddery, doddery I am not’ catch phrase makes me squirm. Its too near the truth to be funny. The the BBC want to be ageist, then start there. Also, if it is true that Christine Bleakley is set to replace Tess Daly, then my Strictly watching days are over.

Why is it that people who make these decisions have no idea who their audience is and it seems do not care. They should be sacked. Lets have someone in charge who actually knows what they’re doing. It actually makes me feel like not watching as a protest – if we all did this perhaps they would listen to the people who pay their wages – i.e. us the license payers.

    July 14th

I have only just recently learned about Brian Fortuna being “offered” a part in a so-called “Chorus Line” instead of as one of the professional dancers.

Who the hell are these cretins who make these decisions!!!! We….the public…are the ones who pay the damn licence fees! We should have been given an opportunity to have a say as to who we want to remain!

This is television bureaucracy GONE MAD!!! Brian is a SUPERB member of the professional team and is obviously a BRILLIANT teacher, or otherwise, how the hell would he got as far as the final last year?

In fact I…..along with millions of others I am sure…….do not want to see any changes in the line-up of judges OR professionals.

For goodness sake….we have a good thing going here.

You know what they say………………if it ain’t broke it..don’t fix it!!

If the BBC are trying to lure a younger audience from X fctor they are wasting their time, the sort of people who watch X factor are not interested in Strictly Come Dancing. Once again the BBC are filling our screens with dumbed down rubbish to appeal to the young, what about the rest of us, the majority who are not out getting drunk on a Saturday night and want some decent programmes on the TV?

  • Waltzing Matilda

Please stop reducing a much loved show to gymnastics and acrobatics in order to compete with ITV’s lowest common denominator ratings grab.
The five dancers being sidelined have the best competitive record by far. Let the new boys join the troupe and let Brian Ian and Matthew continue to train and nurture new partners. No disrespect but they have more charm ,elegance and personality than any of the others.

If Brucie gives up Sundays , please let Brian take over. He would make an excellent host and he still loves and supports Strictly despite the shabby treatment.
PS Bring back Arlene and foget about special guest judges.

    • http://BrianFortuna Mary

Strictly will not be the same without Brian. He is an excellent dancer and I feel very sad that he will not be returning. Please, please get him back.

      • elaine

what is wrong with the people responsible for Strictly?
The fan base is all ages and the dancers they have removed where some of the best. Some of the new dancers have been picked for their looks , and they may be decent dancers but they have the personalities of a cardboard cut out.
Is this a dancing competition or a Mr universe contest, The BBC must think its viewers are dumb and shallow.
I don’t know if I’ll bother to watch this series, shame it used to be a great show.
We need older and younger dancers to appeal to a wide range of viewers.

  • Left Feet

The BBC are not trying to destroy SCD they are trying to keep it going thats why they are making changes all successful shows do this from time to time. Shame nobody who has replied to this is smart enough to realize this. Reaching out to new viewers is not a bad thing you know!

    • Maggie

Reaching out to new viewers IS a bad thing if it alienates the people who have been watching it since the start. We do not need foreign dancers at the expense of Darren, Matthew and Ian – the BBC have made a big mistake here

  • GRANDMA

BBC YOU MUST BE BONKERS TO TREAT THESE WONDERFUL DANCERS IN SUCH A NASTY WAY!

  • http://www.dissertationwritinghelp.co.uk/ Dissertation Help

Wonderful and nice post about “Brian Fortuna quits, Darren, Lilia, Ian and Matthew get the chop…oh BBC!”.

  • http://hotmail Julian from Spain

THey have done it again Got rid of the good ones. Don’t know about the new faces…….. if it an age thing why keep Len Goodman and Bruce Forsyth. Craig is nasty and negative and says nothing good or gives any encouragement Bruno is probably the fairest and Elisha is good but does not know the technicalities but should vote on the stage presence, L think the BBC has lost the plot and Strictly Should walse off into the sunset Very Very VERY dissapointed Saaturday night will not be the same all the hard work the proffessional dancers have give and for what?

  • http://hotmail Julian from Spain

The jugding system should be ammended if you use an odd number of judges you will never encounter a problem with the marks. I have judged many national and international competitions and when the odd numbers are used it stops a tie in points. Double averageing also helps in the event of a tie.

  • Monica

So dissapointed that Matthew Cutler will not be partnered this year what were the bbc thinking bye bye strictly hello X Factor!!!

  • Suzanne Manning

Well . . .. the BBC certainly know how to do it don’t they? I have so enjoyed Strictly for years but I think this time it’s a change (or several) too far. Whoever is responsible for this debacle – and you certainly know who you are – shame on you! Not only am I angry at the way you have treated some very talented and hard working people, I am really T-eed off that you have ruined my evening’s viewing. There’s no competition now – it’s X Factor for me. I hope that someone comes to their senses and brings back the quality of Strictly that we have all loved and delighted in over the years before it just blends seamlessly into all the other ‘sexed up’ trash out there. Sadly, I won’t know if that happens because I won’t be watching.

    BBC – you stink!

  • Susan Ward

What does the BBC think it’s doing……keep the brilliant dancers, Matthew, Lilia, Darren and Brian. Then kindly REMOVE Bruce Forsyth and Len, if Arlene was removed because of age (quite rediculous by the way) why do we still have to look at those two. Or is it only men that need to look at younger faces ie Alesha, who by the way I love! Get a grip BBC, most everyone I know watches Strictly AND X Factor, time you listened to the viewing paying public !!!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • Carole

Just bought the new children’s box set ‘Dress Up and Dance’ with Strictly’s Darren & Lilia, its fabulous and the DVD is great, a perfect Xmas gift for my little girl, she’ll love it.
Still can’t understand why this talented couple are not in this year’s show especially when they are promoting something as good as this.

For me, gucci outlet has always been not dared to spend at discount gucci handbags, on the one hand buy nfl jerseys which is expensive, the other hand, gucci sale with somewhat psychological effects in my mind – in “Sweet Sweet” where Maggie Cheung guided a tour to gucci outlet online the United States, the one next gucci sneakers the Statue of Liberty looks like selling vegetables Aunt of nfl jerseys for sale the old lady asked out loud: “Miss guides, when took us to buy discount gucci shoes?” When I saw the movies the mind came out that how did gucci handbags sale offend the director Peter Chan, who could come up buy jerseys online such a Road Section made fun to this super brand gucci men shoes comes from the Italian.

Just wanted to say, I think the BBC have done the wrong thing by sacking Mathew and Lilia and even Irleen, have they done any comments as to why, Matthew was the best dancer there. Same old story the ones at the top sitting behind their desks, do not know what the punters want. Stupid people.

  • Rosie Porter

Im really not happy with the BBC for what they have done to strictly. First they got rid of Arlene Phillips…who is amazing and they replaced her with Alesha Dixon – who is NOT a professional dancer…she may have won the show but she doesnt have the knowledge of Arlene, plus im training as a professional dancer and Arlene is such an idol – her choreography is amazing and any critisism she gives is from years of experience.
Second, they got rid of the dance off, which was by far the best decision that was made as it had an element of viwers votes and yet still keeping an element of talent!
Thirdly, they get rid of some of the best professionals to replace them with younger models…who cares of their age?! Did anybody really know how old anyone was?! I thought Lilia was in her 20s. The new faces arent the same!
BBC BRING BACK ARLENE, THE DANCE OFF AND THE PROFESSIONALS!

  • http://strictlycomedancing bluecitygirl

Why do the BBC have to mess with a good program . First you replace Arlene with someone with little knowledge of the dances. I like Alesha but not for this show. You should have used one of the dance girls eg Karen. Now you have got rid of our home grown talent. This show is going down hill fast. Next year do yourself’s a favour bring back our talented dancers Darren,Lilia, MATTHEW,Ian and Last years winner Brian. Look after your viewers and stop trying for X Factor viewers who Probably watch your show on catch up TV and I Player. I do not like your Sunday Show its boring bring back the old format and the dance off.

  • http://usacellsearch.com Neida Bartman

I don’t know about you, but I’ve elected myself as the final arbiter of what’s good and bad for me.

  • Miss Shiraz

Would love to know who is responsible for making the decisions re who is to appear on Strictly. Really upset last year when Aleisha replaced Arleen on the panel, was hoping that better judgement would be in envidence for this series but no. What an insult to those Dancers who have been replaced – why not offer them a chance to be a judge rather than soemone who just passes inane commets each week? Bruce needs to go – give Anton the presenting slot please. Stop treating the fans as Morons.

  • http://susie2ireland@yahoo.co.uk susan ireland

i really miss ian waite appearing on the show = also the others who seem to have been replaced
why does the bbc have to spoil a goo line-up – also dont like the way the last couple is kicked out – much better to have the judges choose
you shouldnt mess around with a winning formula –
    bring back ian –
its so nice to see him taking brendons place for a while!!!!

  • http://susie2ireland@yahoo.co.uk susan ireland

  • Sarah B

The last two years of Strictly just haven’t been the same. I still don’t think Alesha is right for the judging panel; if they fancied a change, Karen Hardy would have been a far better choice. Now they have changed the line up of professional dancers as well as the dance off. I’m all for change if it improves things but it seems to have taken the heart out of the show… My 14 year old daughter agrees and says that she misses Arlene, as the chemistry between the judges was so good, as well as looking forward to seeing her favourite dancers each week – Darren, Lilia, Ian…. If they’re trying to appeal to the younger generation, it’s NOT WORKING!!

  • Claire M

It’s so lovely to see Ian Waite back on the show. Bring him back permanantly!

  • Julia d

Totally agree bring back Ian,Darren,Lilia and Matt Strictly shouldn’t have changed their format-if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!! It’s not as good as it was

  • Hilda

Miss lili a Darren and Matthew and ian

  • Amy

I agree! They were far better choreogrpahers and better teachers you could tell.
Strictly can spend as much as they like on new props and costumes but it will not make some of the naff, cheesey routines that we’re seeing this year look any better!
Strictly is definatley not as good this year!

  • Amy

Oh Yeah, One tip for the BBC if you want better ratings and attract people away from the dreaded X Factor there is one person you definatley should get rid of is Bruce! thank god for Sky Plus I record the show just so I can fastforward his cringe worthy, dated jokes!

  • Ruth Taylor

I was really sad when Arlene was sacked from the show; she was a great judge. Now the BBC have axed some great dancers too! What do they think they are doing? Any more of these stupid actions and I shall stop watching the show despite having watched it avidly from the start of series 1.

  • Amy Smith

So what has happened to the so called Proffessional show dancers? They seem to have disappeared and the competing professionals are back to doing the exhibition dances on the results show.

  • http://DancersAxed From Holland

IThink it is appalling that all these wonderful dancers have been axed because of their age, it would seem that two new dancers are the saem or there about disgusting. Non of them are old and they dance so beautiful as prooved by Ian waite this week end, it would appear he seemed to get more out of his partner than Brendon did, not forgetting Brendon was going through an very sad time. BRING BACK the good dancers as well.

  • Vanessa Pryce

We are delighted to see so many older contestants this year so why on earth take on younger professionals who do not have the experience of teaching on such a high pressure show. Personally I think Ian Waite is absolutely excellent but also Darren, Lilia and Matthew. Perhaps Brian might have found it difficult if he is still with Ali. The professionals are the permanent celebrities of the show, along with Bruce, Tessa and the judges, the contestants are just extras who come and go. VP

  • http://windows irenemeredith

i will not be watching strictly again always my favourate programme and i am 83 to see ann widicombe every week is disgusting she is awful and at 83 i look younger than her i think the winning ones are chosen by the bbc not by the pulic who spend a lot of money for the good ones si have stopped watching and voting and will not be watching any more even any new programmes irenemeredith

  • Shelley

I’m utterly outraged at the BBCs disregard for our Strictly pro’s Darren & Lilia, they where real favourites of mine! I’ve been a dedicated Strictly fan right from series 1 and loved to see the Pro’s return to see who they got ‘this year’ It started all to go wrong when they let go Nicola Cutler, then of cause Camilla and dear Arlene. As for contestants John Sargent and Ann Widdicome well ….the stake is being driven deeper and deeper. BBC stop trying to improve the entertianment value of our gem that is a DANCE show and we like our DANCE Pro’s get them back and you may well get your audience back!

    • Cimba

Unfortunately it’s an entertainment show. If it was dancing, they would have to have dancers. The main reason for SCD’s success this year has been Anne and Anton’s fantastic contribution. I agree though with you about the disappearing professional dancers – Ian Waite, Darren and Lilya – what a loss.

  • http://strictly Barbra

Please do not do any more changes bring back arlene she knows the dances and technique well do not get of the good dancers to replace them with young ones. It is the older generation that watches the programme thats why I am voting for pamela.

  • http://live jo-anna

I Live in Holland ,and enjoyed watching Strictly, infact so much that I changed my work routine to be able to watch my fasvorite dancers.I just read to my horror that the bbc have got rid of quite a few dancers.Have they gone stark raving madd??first Mrs Philips had to go.and when is it mr Goodmans turn, are there more dancers taking the place of the older onces!!!Get rid of Bruce he is so very full of im self,I cant stand the bloke !!but leave are strictly dancers ALONE
OH yes perhaps Kara can take Lens place!I think not!!!!

  • W Williams

bring back the regular [older]dancers or lose your regular viewers

  • lorraine

the boses are going to ruin a great show ,bring back the fav,if they carry on they will lose more veiwers not through the xfactor but through there own fault !! i giive the boses a big fat O !!

  • Riversdale

show fast becoming a ‘Variety end of pier’ only need magicians and jugglers.  What started out as a D A N C I N G show is now a fiasco with all the props.  Dance time in total is barely 15 min.  On show night far too much repeat opening sequence and training clips.   BBC has an obsession with fixing things that are not broken!

  • Beatriceannn

Bring back Darren and Lillia also Ian Waite before the show collapses. It would also be a great benefit to see Arlene Phillips replace Aleica Dixon who does not know what she is talking about and is only there for the dresses she wears. The only good thing is you have kept Bruce Forsyth, who is a national treasure.

  • Red Ed

There are some wonderful dancers on the show. But getting rid of the dance off was a mistake.
Also I miss the familiar faces, Ian, Matthew, Lilia etc. I now do a crossword whilst I am watching and waiting for the best bits.
Some of the celebrities  I’ve never heard off. Love Rusell tho.

  • Patricia

Last nights Strictly (19th Nov 11) was the worse one I have watched, The venue was all wrong, too many  people, too many nerves, and the dancing was not as good as we’ve seen, obviously, the judges were watching a different show to the rest of us, according to the scores!!!! Come back Blackpool, all is forgiven……….

    • alice

i agree  with   patricia  it was rubbish but i hate the going out bit  its so unfair

  • Soundaspounduk

I dont agree with getting rid of these dancers but… the bbc can not be accused of ageism when bruce forsyth is the oldest television presenter on TV at this moment in time? also the show still has Anton Du Beke who is 45 and Erin Boag who is 36 so ageism? Erm I dont think so!!!

  • 49rob

will you please give claudia winkleman a decent outfit she looks terrible in black, also tell her to stop trying to be a comedienne she is so out of place on the show
