Tina O’Brien to join Strictly 2010 line-up…that’s Sarah Platt to you and me

Former Coronation Street actress Tina O’Brien has become the latest star to sign up for Strictly Come Dancing.

The 26-year-old who played Sarah-Louise Platt in the soap will join the likes of Good Life actress Felicity Kendal and former minister Ann Widdecombe on the next series.

Also signed up to appear on the BBC dancing show are Gavin Henson, rugby star and ex-partner of Charlotte Church, and actress Patsy Kensit.

Manchester born O’Brien first starred in Children’s Ward and Clocking Off before she joined Corrie in 1999 and left the show in 2007.

Her most famous storyline was the teen pregnancy and birth of baby Bethany in the drama.

She has been lined up to appear in the next series of BBC1 school drama Waterloo Road.

Miss O’Brein famously had a relationship with co-star Ryan Thomas, who played Jason Grimshaw in the soap and the pair had a child together in 2008. But the pair split up after a series of rows in 2009.

The first bunch of signings for the show represent a coup for the series as they are already of a higher calibre than many of those who took part in the last series.

Critics condemned the number of barely recognisable contestants who appeared on the 2009 show, declaring the Strictly dancers were more famous than the celebrity contestants.

But this year the BBC is attempting to re-ignite the show – and reverse a ratings slump – with more high profile and interesting contestants.

Yesterday it was confirmed that dancers Ian Waite and Darren Bennett will return to Strictly as part of this series’ new professional dance group.

But Matthew Cutler and Lilia Kopylova won’t return as a permanent members of the dance group.

Miss Widdecombe, who recently stepped down as an MP, is being lined up in the John Sergeant role of lovable trier in the next series, amid claims she could surprise viewers with her skills.

She was an MP between 1987 and this year when she stepped down at the last election. She has been widely tipped as Britain’s next ambassador to the Vatican.

Felicity Kendal was made a CBE in 1995, has been married twice and has two sons. In 1991 playwright Tom Stoppard left his wife to be with Miss Kendal but she has since reunited with her second husband.

She has also appeared in ITV murder mystery series Rosemary & Thyme as well as Channel 4’s acclaimed drama The Camomile Lawn.

More recently, in 2008, she starred in an episode of Doctor Who alongside David Tennant.

The inclusion of Miss Kendal, as well as Miss Widdecombe, would appear to be recognition that last year’s show, full of young soap stars and actresses, was in danger of alienating the heartland middle-aged audience.

Miss Kensit, 42, like Jo Wood on last year’s show, is appearing on the series after the break-up of her marriage.

Mr Henson, 28, who recently split from Miss Church, will appeal to younger viewers and sports fans.

Traditionally athletes have done quite well on the show, including rugby star Austin Healey.

The number of contestants this year has been cut from 16 to 14.

Well that’s gone n done it BBC. They messed around with the format and have lost Mathew Cutler my favourite dancer. You make me sick, just leave things alone. The powers that be should listen to the fans but no you think you know better. Well let me tell you, don’t think I’ll be watching and have watched it since the beginning. So there!!!

  • Left Feet

Why should they its not the fans show! I think that Matthew Cutler is a great dancer as is Lilia Kopylova but the have been in five and six series we have seen all that they can do and they have both won. Its sad so see them go and I would others had left before them but whats done is done. I think that the BBC have been quilty in the past years in not changing things so the show has become stale. They have to do this to keep the show fresh!

  • BARBARA REES

Wot u on about it’s not the fans show it is us who watches it n makes it so popular. Sure we should have a say about what happens on it! The show was not stale it was the quality of the stars some of them only on the show to further promote their ailing careers. Heaven forbid if Katie Price wanted to be on.

  • Anna

I AM GUTTED, YOU HAVE RUINED MY LAST THREE MONTHS OF EACH YEAR, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED STRICTLY AND NOW YOU HAVE SPOILED IT BEYOND ALL RECOGNITION. I HOPE ITS AN UTTER DISASTER. I SHALL NOW WATCH X FACTOR AS WILL ALL MY FRIENDS. YOU SHOULD BE THINKING MORE SENSIBLY, I COULD DO THE JOB BETTER THAN YOU LOT.

  • Left Feet

Right of course you can, look I’ll type this as simple as I can so that simple folk can understand. The BBC have to make the show for the millions of people watching it not just a few hundred die hards. Both Matthew and Lila who are among my favourite pros have done an excellent job but I think after five and six series its time for them to move on and I’m sure they are looking forward to the future all the pros know that they are on year to year conteacts. The show belongs to the BBC and not the fans and rightly so!

    • Right Feet

Anyone else suspect that Left Feet is actually an entire room full of BBC marketing ‘executives’?

      • BARBARA REES

Yes agree, was thinking left feet were on the BBC payroll, heads sticking the sand comes to mind with their comments. Why don’t they just sack all the ‘older dancers’ then, wot about Anton, Brendan, Erin they all over 30, just ruin the show completely, end of…no debate then no show….a

  • Piddles

Ye he’s certainly on their payroll. I thought this show was more about the celebrities and their progression. If the fans give up watching hence no show, so BBC should listen to its fan. I for once would love to see Arlene back. She was a true professional and last year was not the same without her.

  • Left Feet

Oh I’m not I just have a differient point of view that not everything the BBC has done to the show has been bad if the fans (I mean the die hards) had their way nothing would change and the show would have died a death years ago. I liked Arlene but once again a change of the panel was needed and Alesha did a fair job after a hard first week. I’m glad she’s back to judge an enterainment show
